The beginnings of Smith Westerns were fomented while the trio of Cullen (guitar, lead vocals) and Cameron Omori (bass) and Max Kakacek (guitar) were still in high school. Around this time, they were introduced to the halcyon era of glam-rock, opening their eyes to David Bowie, Marc Bolan, T-Rex. The resultant self-titled debut - released in 2009 - was a revelation, with the trio showing remarkable facility in assimilating influences belying their age group, while also hardwiring them to a stomp and swagger entirely their own. The album release won them instant buzz and soon they were signed with Fat Possum Records. When it came to recording their next album however, the band were intent on pushing it to the next level as much as possible, recruiting producer Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Fever to Tell, TV On the Radio’s Dear Science and Beach House’s Teen Dream). The resultant, Dye It Blonde is an album destined to soundtrack hot, hazy summer days and a million house parties, driving along the open road with the top down or even rowdy nights in. Come see the band as they embark on the next step in their musical journey!

After a 4 year hiatus, British glam rockers, The Darkness, are back with a vengeance! The band who spawned 2003’s “I Believe In A Thing Called Love,” voted one of the best rock songs of all time by VH1, are out to prove they are no 1-trick pony. Their debut, Permission To Land, went gold in the US and quadruple platinum in the UK selling well over 1 million copies spawning 4 successful singles. Their follow-up, 2005’s One Way Ticket To Hell... And Back, however, did not live up to the success and the band called it quits back in 2006. The Darkness members went their own ways forming such bands like Stone Gods and Hot Leg. However, the legend of “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” lived on, and in early 2011 Justin Hawkins and company couldn’t keep themselves away any longer as they announced their reunion. Hitting the studio earlier this year with a tentative release date of 2012 for their 3rd album, The Darkness return ready to take their place at the top of the charts again. This is a can’t-miss comeback!

Metro is happy to present, for the second year in a row, one of the highlights of the winter concert season - Metro's Winter Soulstice! This year, Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires headline the very special event. Charles Bradley has had lifetime of paying dues, having nomadically labored for decades at various day jobs from Maine to Alaska – singing and performing in his spare time – before re-settling in his hometown Brooklyn and eventually finding a musical home at Dunham Records, an imprint of Daptone Records. The label’s debut album of its inaugural vocalist, “No Time For Dreaming”, was released earlier this year. In his distinctively rough-hewn timbre one hears the unmistakable voice of experience – each note and gruff inflection a reflection of his extended, sometimes rocky, personal path. Since the album’s releae, Charles has been touring with The Menahan Street Band and honing his passion as a singer and an entertainer - Charles Bradley spent most of his life dreaming for a better one, and now there is no more time for dreaming, just time for singing, dancing and loving!

Since The Reverend Horton Heat formed in 1985, they have acquired quite a resume. The band has released nine studio albums, and one holiday album all while performing live over the past 20 years. They have described their sound as "country-fed punkability" and have seemed to combine country, punk, big band, swing, and rockabilly together. Their lyrics are often humorous and The Reverend Horton Heat's frontman, Jim Health who is also know was "The Rev", has developed a devoted cult following due to his blistering and energetic stage performance. His antics on stage may seem a little crazy but Health claims he wouldn't have it any other way. He has said, "I think it's cool we've lasted this long. People still come out to see us play after all these years, all the shows and all the tours. It's amazing. I mean, I get to sing songs about cars I love, drinking, and chasing girls. Beats the hell out of the alternative." Come check out what all the hype is about when The Reverend Horton Heat play at Metro this spring!

After meeting as teenagers in New York City, founding members of Balkan Beat Box Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat decided they needed to create a unique sound all their own. They formed their band in 2005 and added frontman Tomer Yosef, a frequent collaborator and friend, to round out their multicultural musical mashup of Balkan-inspired beats. With former Gogol Bordello musician Kaplan on melodies and horns and ex-Firewater member Muskat on beats and production, adding lead vocalist and lyricist Yosef brings an onstage energy to their exciting live shows that cannot be caged. Fusing their Balkan-Mediterranean sound with punk, electronic, jazz discipline and hip-hop creates an international dynamic that, though NY born and bred, breaks the artificial borders that contain most music. Their most recent album, 2010’s Blue Eyed Black Boy, continues this trend and incorporates a new library of beats and drum sounds to create an organic album of varying styles. Adding in electronica, cumbia and Afrobeat, as well as a blend of international musicians and their own musical styles, Blue Eyed Black Boy celebrates a sound that won’t be contained by any city, space or four walls. BBB’s live shows prove to be just as inspiring with Tomer Yosef adding his unique exuberance to create a brotherhood of musicians onstage that will thrill and inspire audiences.

Raised on the South Side of Chicago, the Tossers grew up in an Irish Catholic community fostered by guilt, tradition, and indulging heavily in music and drink. Their name "The Tossers" means commode, drunk, or the currency of Britain rejected when the Irish established their independance in the 1920s. This seems to represent the themes and melodies of their six albums all influenced by traditional folk songs and punk rock. The band started back in 1993 with all members not recalling exactly when or why they came together, but all knew they would play anywhere at anytime for little or no pay. They aim to keep spirits light, the music fast and rambuncious, and to please their ever expanding crowd. The seven piece band has opened for more well-known Celtic punk bands such as Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, and in 2007 opened for the Pogues in New York City on St. Patrick's Day. These performances however have not distracted The Tossers from playing the pubs and taverns of Chicago's north and south sides, where people from all walks of life and devoted fans gather to indulge in the lively atmosphere.

Georgia natives, of Montreal, may be named after an unsuccessful tryst with a girl from Montreal, but their career is anything but unsuccessful. Forming in 1996, of Montreal’s music is hard to peg, but even harder to get out of your head. Catchy rhythms combined with front man’s, Kevin Barnes, falsetto-type vocals make this neo-psychedelic, funk, glam, indie band a mainstay in the music industry.

Almost 16 years, 8 line-up switch-ups, and 10 albums later, of Montreal are back yet again with their 11th studio effort, Paralytic Stalks, due for release in 2012. In early November, the band announced it finished recording and released “Wintered Debts” on their website, rumored to be the first single off their upcoming album. The product of two classmates of the Lycée Français de New York, Nada Surf was formed by Matthew Caws and Daniel Lorca in the early nineties. After a series of self-released 7"s and demo tapes, the band was picked up by a Spanish record label, subsequently recording their first LP. The European label deal ultimately fell through, but their demo was picked up by producer Rick Ocasek (Cars, Weezer) who offered to produce a re-recording of their debut LP material. After signing to Elektra in 1995, Nada Surf finally released their debut LP High/Low with their single "Popular" leading to fame, popularity, and success almost overnight. Fearful of being lumped into the category of "one-hit-wonder," Nada Surf returned to the studio to record 1998's Proximity Effect, which they released on their own in 2000 on Caw's own upstart label MarDev. After a four-year break the band signed to Barsuk Records and released Let Go to critical acclaim in 2002. Trevor Powers, a 22 year-old former English Lit major from Boise, Idaho, dropped out of college and quit his job at Urban Outfitters to pursue a career in indie-pop music. Powers started to write and record under the name Youth Lagoon and immediately gained industry buzz. Powers signed with a two-album deal with Fat Possum Records and recorded his (often described as dreamy) album, The Year of Hibernation, in his room at his parents house. Powers describes Youth Lagoon best by saying, "Youth Lagoon isn't me. It's merely a part of me. I was in and out of different bands in high school and always tried to define myself by what music I played. I tried to find a sense of meaning by being in a band. But it wasn't until this last year- when I realized I was more than just music- that I was able to create music that means something to me. And that is Youth Lagoon."

Wild Flag is a Portland, Oregon- and Washington, DC-based quartet consisting of Carrie Brownstein, Rebecca Cole, Mary Timony, and Janet Weiss. The members of Wild Flag have played in numerous and notable bands including Sleater-Kinney, Helium, Quasi, The Minders, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, and others. The four musicians who make up Wild Flag have known one another for well over a decade. Wild Flag wanted to figure out dynamics, hear how the songs breathed in a live context, build cohesion and unity, and emerge as a singular force prior to putting those sounds onto tape. Wild Flag always intended to grow organically, never wanting to take for granted that an audience existed based on previous endeavors. So, instead of recording an album and then playing shows, they went on various tours, playing tiny club shows in the US and building up a fervent audience of their own. In April of 2011, they went to Sacramento, California, where they recorded their self-titled album with engineer Chris Woodhouse at the Hangar. Now they are touring the U.S. this spring!

It took two years, but Sweet Heart Sweet Light, the newest album by Spiritualized, comes out in March, and the band travels across the globe to play the songs for their devoted fans this Spring! Jason Pierce, a.k.a. J. Spaceman, decided to depart from his former band Spacemen 3 and take a few other old band members along for the ride. They formed Spiritualized in 1990, which has gone through a different lineup of contributing musicians for each of their last six studio albums, but still retains all of its space-inspired, psychedelic rock roots. Jason, being the only constant member, writes, composes and sings all songs for the group. Their sound has influences of African-American gospel, blues and soul with rotating band members adding all the other traditional elements of rock. Spiritualized’s next album, Sweet Heart Sweet Light, is set to be released in April and has been at least two years in the making with an additional year of home-mixing done by J. Spaceman himself. This seventh album will be the first since 2008’s Songs in A&E and will embrace more “poppy” songs partially inspired from the band’s live performances of Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space. Released in 1997, Ladies and Gentlemen... was voted Album of the Year in the UK by the popular music publication NME, beating out Radiohead’s critically acclaimed OK Computer, and continues to be the band’s most well-known album to date. In support of Sweet Heart Sweet Light, released by Fat Possum in the US, Spiritualized have booked a slew of dates all across the UK and North America starting in March with a stop at the Metro on May 3rd.

Yann has been honing his musical aesthetic since he could stand on two legs. Born in 1970 in Brest, Brittany, on the western edge of continental Europe, he started learning piano at the age of four, but his commercial breakthrough would come with 1998′s Le Phare (The Light House), which was recorded in self-imposed seclusion on the isle of Ouessant. Le Phare confirmed Yann’s status as one of the most pioneering and original artists of his generation and commencing a run of successful albums like 2001′s L’Absente (featuring orchestral group Synaxis, Lisa Germano and the Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon) and 2005′s Les Retrouvailles (with guests Stuart Staples of Tindersticks, Jane Birkin and Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins). Following the box-office success of Amelie, Yann’s skills as a soundtracker were much in demand, leading to scores for the likes of Wolfgang Becker’s tragicomedy Good Bye Lenin! (2003) and Tabarly (2008). October 2010 saw the release of Tiersen’s sixth studio album titled Dust Lane. In addition to his U.S. tour, Tiersen has been chosen by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that he will curate in March 2012 in Minehead, England.

The term Mogwai may hold several different meanings. Mogwai means “ghost” in Chinese and is also the creature in the movie Gremlins. But most importantly, Mogwai is the five piece post rock band hailing from Glasgow, Scotland composed of Stuart Braithwaite, John Cummings, Barry Burns, Dominic Aitchison, and Martin Bulloch. Influenced by the likes of Sonic Youth, Slint, and My Bloody Valentine, Mogwai has established their own sound and place in the post rock genre. After the unfortunate cancellation of a handful of US tour dates last year, Mogwai is heading back to the U.S. to tour their latest album Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will and the EP Earth Division which was released just a few months ago. Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will is Mogwai’s seventh studio album and the first to be released on Sub Pop Records in February 2011. It was a success upon release receiving impressive reviews from NME, SPIN, and Rolling Stone. The closing track on the album, You’re Lionel Richie, was taken from the moment band member Stuart Braithwaite ran into Lionel Richie in the airport. Braithwaite’s reaction to seeing Lionel Richie was “You’re Lionel Richie”- giving life to the name of the track. Without many vocals in their music, Mogwai can still deliver strong, shrieking, and striking post rock medleys on each of their tracks translating to a one of kind experience during a live show. The band claims that this could be their last long tour for awhile, so don’t miss your chance to see them on the Metro stage this summer!
